I was born in Fort Waters, Malaika Province, on Peregrine. For the first 21 years of my life, I never heard of Union or ThirdComm or any of this stuff; Cradle was still a myth to us. Growing up, I heard old folks talk about the days of the kingdom, when the Caldwells held the throne and ruled all of Peregrine as one, but they were long gone when I was born. By the time I was around, it was every house for itself. My family were small potatoes. If my father hadn't been damn good at picking alliances and willing to stick his neck out to keep them, one of the real players would've rolled right over us, and I probably wouldn't be here today.</p><p>He bought it when I was nineteen, fighting for the Lecters—we were vassals to them, then—and I became lord of House Yadin. For the next two years, I fought the Lecters' wars for them. Back then, we talked about the battles we won and the forts we took and the houses we defeated like those things mattered. I'm not going to do that here. What's important is this: I led kids younger than me, conscripts who'd been pressganged into service against their will, to their deaths. I burned settlements in scorched-earth attacks. I executed prisoners without anything the DoJ/HR would consider a trial.</p><p>5015U was when Union arrived in-system. I think the new government ended up making it a federal holiday. We hadn't traveled beyond our system since the diaspora, so obviously, it was a pretty big deal. The nobility was curious at first, but it didn't take long for them to start worrying, once the administrators started talking about universal human rights and post-scarcity and self-determination. We'd all grown up never knowing there was any way but ours. A few of us, in my generation mostly, wanted to listen. To try something new.</p><p>The first few houses declared war just under a year after the first contact. Almost all the rest followed. When I started talking about going Union, most of our forces backed my sister Sadiya in a coup against me. My other sister, Leah, was the only one who stuck with me. Far as I know, none of the rest of my family survived the war. It didn't last long. Union had printers, NHPs, and the resources of a whole galaxy. We had a few patched-up relic mechs and some farmers with rifles. By the end of the next year, the few houses left had all capitulated, and Peregrine had a republic.</p><p>Leah stayed. I couldn't. I spent my whole life being fed off those people's backs. And I knew there were a lot of other assholes like me out there who needed to die so people could be free.
